How to make grizzly feather hair extension

I've noticed feather hair extensions are selling for as much as $50 on eBay and even more if you want to get it done in a hair salon, which is a lot of money if you are getting nothing but a few feathers. Admittingly long and thin feathers are very hard to find, that's because they come from specially breed of chicken that produce long feathers for fly tying.

So I came up with a way to make feather hair extension with very little money. First select some regular chicken tail feathers (aka coque feathers), they should look like this:

I got them from Michael's for $2.99. They were sold tied to a feather pick (in the floral arrangement aisle) with at least 30 different feathers including turkey, chicken, and peacock threads. From this bundle I found about 10 feathers suitable for making hair extensions. Remove the small frizz at the base of the feathers before you begin.

In addition to the right feathers, you will also need masking tape (do NOT use any other kind of tape), Sharpie marker, needle and thread, and some form of hair clip (bobby pins, hair extension clips, alligator clips, etc) to attach the feathers to your hair.

First tear off a length of tape longer than your feather, then carefully stick the entire feather to the masking tape. Get as much hair near the center of the feather to line up as possible.

Next take a sharp scissor and cut out the thin center strip. Cut as straight as possible.

To make the grizzly pattern, simply use a Sharpie marker and mark the pattern out.

Carefully lift the feather from the masking tape.

You can dye the feathers with Kool-Aid if you want the feathers in other colors. Simply add one tablespoon of water to one packet of Kool-Aid, throughly saturate each feather with the mixture. Wrap the feathers in plastic wrap and microwave for about a minute. Wash the feathers in water and let them dry. Do this before painting the pattern with Sharpie marker.

Finally use needle and thread to attach the feathers to a hair clip. Tie a few feathers together with thread first then tie the entire bundle to a clip.

OMG! So helpful! I was wondering instead of chicken tail feathers I have two pet Cockatiels, and I keep a vast "collection" of flight and tail feathers they leave behind, so would that work?

Roxy: As long as the feather has a thin and flexible stem (most cockerel feathers do), you can trim it down and make them exactly like the thin feathers for making feather extensions. The tail feathers works might better. You will probably need to practice a few times to get it perfectly trimmed. Make sure you use masking tape, otherwise the feather might get stuck on the tape.

Nice post. I learn something more challenging on different blogs every day. It will always be stimulating to read content from other writers and practice a little something from their store. I’d prefer to use some with the content on my blog whether you don’t mind. Naturally I’ll give you a link on your web blog.
Anyway thanks!
