I have never watched Glee before, but a friend of mine mentioned one character wore a mini top hat to her junior prom. I made a similar top hat for her. I used a Pringle can lid for the brim and half of a toiler paper roll for the crown.

Since the Kentucky Derby was this weekend, I made a hat more appropriate for Kentucky Derby. Instead of buying a hat frame, I just used a witch hat from Halloween and cut off the pointy crown part. The actual crown of the hat is made from papier-mache formed on a balloon. The entire hat is then covered with taffeta. I was so excited to watch the Royal wedding, for the hats of course. I also discovered a new way to make hats using burlap. Cut a small piece of burlap. Soak burlap in hot water to soften the fiber, stretch the material onto a mold (I used a foam shape, you can use a tuna can, a bowl, a cookie tin, etc), and either secure tightly with a rubber band or thumb tacks (if the mold is foam). Let it dry thoroughly, and completely cover with extra hold hair spray several times (buy the cheapest but the strongest hair spray, like generic Aqua Net). Finally bind the edge with bias tape (gluing with hot glue gun will be easier than sewing). The hat is ready to decorate. |
