Traditional material for making cocktail hats like sinamay and buckram are hard to come by, so you can use alternative materials such as cardboard for the base. You can use any cardboard box such as cereal box.
First cut a circle or teardrop shape out of the cardboard, cut a slit along the radius. Next overlap the two cut edges, glue the sides together to form a shallow cone.

This is exactly what I needed! Thanks so much...Is there anything else I could use instead of cardboard that would maybe last longer?

Hi Julie,

I have used those clear plastic lids similar to the kind used in coffee cans, you can either used the short cylindrical shape or cut off the edge and make a cone like I did with the cardboard. You can also use the bottom of a plastic tray from large frozen dinner. In other words you can use pretty much any thin plastic that you can cut with a good scissor. I would just use a hot glue gun to make the cone shape or glue anything on it.
